circa 1863 Mortar and Pestle

While antiquing in Jacksonville, Oregon a historic landmark town in Southern Oregon I came across this cast iron mortar and pestle. I really wanted to buy it but I hesitated. Later that day I went home and did some research online and found that they were selling for around $400 (in better condition than this one) I found that they were used by the gold assayers and that they were made in Oregon for that purpose around the year 1863 and in later years used by apothecaries and chefs. I sweated out the weekend and ran back hoping it was still there Monday morning, it was marked at $50 and I got her to sell it to me for $45 and now it is a prized part of my cast iron dutch oven collection.
